 About KO Telemedicine
The Keewaytinook Okimakanak Telemedicine (KOTM) program is the most successful First Nation Telemedicine initiative in Canada (Canadian Society of Telehealth Award of Excellence, 2006). To build upon this success, the program is undergoing several changes to better meet the need of First Nations communities and become a sustainable program. One of the changes is to update our name and logo.
 
The new logo includes the four colours, which represent the holistic aspect of our program. The four colours represent the four races, the four direction, and encompass all aspects of the earth to reflect the scope of Telemedicine. The circle imbedded in the symbol represents the "network" aspect of Telemedicine and how it connects communities to health services. The cross symbol represents the medical symbol. The overall look of the logo is reflective of the type of beadwork done by the woman of Northwestern Ontario, where we are located.
 
The name Keewaytinook Okimakanak Telehalth has been changed to KO Telemedicine. It was recommened during community consultation that the "KO" be kept to recognize Keewaytinook Okimakanak Tribal Council, the founding organization of the program. In addition, communities were used to the name and a drastic name change would cause confusion to communities. The word "Telemedicine" was chosen to avoid misunderstanding with the "Ontario Telehealth" phone service and distinguish KO Telemedicine as a videoconferencing health service. In addition, the term Telemedicine was translated and understood by the elders in the communities. Tele-mush-ki-ki is the translation in Oji Cree.
 
Please note that the great service and community based/holistic vision of the KO Telemedicine program has not changed. We will continue to develope and meet the needs of out communities to obtain the vision of a holistic Telemedicine Network.

KO Telemedicine is a program that helps deliver better health care services to remote communities. KOTM currently serves 26 communities including North Caribou Lake that began in Spring 2004.
 
KOTM uses telemedicine workstations which have patient cameras, stethoscope, otoscope and document camera. Our goal is to improve First Nations access to health professionals and health programming.
 
Services available through KOTM: Clinical Consults, Various Education Sessions, Family Visits, Video Conferences/Meetings, etc.
